Introduction: The Home Video Genre
Home video can be one of the most rewarding pursuits in the field of media work. Despite being an amateur pastime, it is a serious genre with great cultural significance.
Unfortunately, a lot of home video fails to achieve it's purpose. We all know what it's like to watch tedious home-made movies. Why are some some videos painful to watch while others are highly entertaining?
The answer is simple. People who produce high-quality home videos have two critical skills:
- Proficiency in camera work.
- The ability to formulate and work to a plan.
The tutorials in this section assume that you have basic camera skills. If you aren't sure about this, see our video camera tutorials — you should be familiar with most of the main topics covered.
Note: To create top-class video you will also need to edit footage, but it's not a disaster if you don't have editing facilities. Basic camera skills and a plan will be enough to make a big difference.
Once you have a solid grasp of camera work, you are ready to create a plan for more entertaining and enduring home video productions...
